Hope for children

We are living in an increasingly diverse world, and this is a wonderful gift. Our children attend schools with children who are much different than they are. For example, more children are being raised by single parents, by same sex parents and in blended families. Many children are non-native English speakers and some are children with disabilities (both physical and mental) Parents teach children how to brush their teeth, to comb their hair, to be responsible and to be successful. We do so by introducing and reinforcing behavior that helps achieve these goals. We should do the same when it comes to appreciating diversity. It is only then that we can move from tolerance to acceptance.  (Metzler  2009).   As a parent and a teacher my goal is to help children understand and respect each others cultures, similarities and differences.  Everyone is entitled to their own view, cultures, traditions and religion,  Educating children on how each other ...

The Personal Side of Bias, Prejudice, and Oppression

   What memory do you have of an incident when you experienced bias, prejudice, and/or oppression,  or  witnessed someone else as the target of bias, prejudice, and/or oppression? Keep in mind that one can encounter such incidents in real contexts, including online environments, as well as in fictional ones, such as movies, books, television shows, and the like. I was sitting getting a manicure.  The women who work there are Koreon and Mexican.  They speak to each other in Korean and in Spanish.  The girl sitting next me was talking to her friend and "said all these people are the same chinese people are the same".   The girl replied "yea they are, they don't even speak english".  The manicurist looked up and smiled and continued to work on the girls nails.  I have been going to the dame place for years.  Not only do the women speak English, they speak Spanish, and Korean,  The Mexican women speak some Korean and Engl...
