My hopes are for us to make strides in equilty and respect for others.  We need to start with children.  By promoting and teaching children that we are all the same and all different is a great starting point.  Children need accurate information, and we need to address their questions and concerns with that information.  Positive and accurate learning experiences about human differences and similarities  help give children a foundation for resisting incorrect and harmful messages about themselves and others.  Preschoolers are ready to begin thinking critically  about the accuracy and fairness of the information ad images they encounter. (Derman Sparks 2010) I want to thank everyone for their input and contributions during this course.   Good Luck on your journey.

Children of Honduras

Image
Many children living in  Honduras especially the rural areas and impoverished areas live is squallar.    These children and their families live with little or no amenities.    These families have little to no health care, food, sanitary drinking water, or access to education.  Children who are able to are forced to work for food instead of attending school.  The poor economic situation has devastating effects on the living standards of children, particularly in rural areas. In urban areas, the children most affected are those living in “ barrios marginales ”. These are the most impoverished neighbourhoods with little or no amenities, located at the edge of cities. The price of  food  and  water  is too high for the majority of the population who are unable to meet their needs or access basic commodities and services such as  health  and  education . Some families are therefore forced to make their c...

Sexualization of Early Childhood

Image
Today our children are subjected to sex an secuality in many forms at ages as young as 2.        I few years back I had a 2 year child would would come to school wearing purple lipstick and try to kiss the children on the lips, she would rub against them or girate against them.  My assistants and I would question this behavior.  We tried to ask her what she watched at home or outside of school.  We will address her and let her know we cannot do those things in school.  While we were still left questioning the behaviors  it is a product of what children see around them, on television, ipad, in the music,  everything around us is sexualized.   When sex in the media is talked about, it is often criticized from a puritanical perspective—there’s too much of it, it’s too blatant, it will encourage kids to be promiscuous. But sex in commercial culture has far more to do with trivializing and ob...

Effects of Racism on Children and Families

Image
Children and families who are subjected to racism suffer many effects, emotional, behavioral  and developmentally. 1- stress and health issues 2 -Social withdrawal 3 - Depression 4- Internalized oppression and feelings of inferiority In the child in my class who was Arabic,  his family beliefs were different from the ones of the dominant culture in my class.  He looked and dressed different.  The children were not sure what to make of him and stayed to themselves.  They didn't not interact with this boy much.   Askash became withdrawn and I can see he was becoming self conscious.  His mother became concerned because even at home he was unhappy.  My assistant and I decided that we needed to rectify the situation.  We started to have the children take turns doing All about me posters.  This included what they like and do not like  pictures of their favorite characters, books, and family.  Once the children star...
