My hopes are for us to make strides in equilty and respect for others.  We need to start with children.  By promoting and teaching children that we are all the same and all different is a great starting point.  Children need accurate information, and we need to address their questions and concerns with that information.

Positive and accurate learning experiences about human differences and similarities  help give children a foundation for resisting incorrect and harmful messages about themselves and others.  Preschoolers are ready to begin thinking critically  about the accuracy and fairness of the information ad images they encounter. I want to thank everyone for their input and contributions during this course.
Good Luck on your journey.

  1. Stephanie,
Great quote from Obama! Yes, I agree that we need to teach children that it is okay to be the same as other people, but also, it is okay to be different as well. We must embrace each other and welcome diversity. It is so important to address children's questions or concerns immediately and in a calm manner. We must be able to give them the accurate information they are looking for, help them understand what is going on around them, and to assure them that everything will be okay. "Ignoring comments and actions that indicate pre-prejudice gives the child permission to attack another's identity, and it leaves all children feeling unsafe in your classroom" (Derman-Sparks & Olsen Edwards, 2010, p. 34). Thank you for a positive and supportive online environment during this course. I wish you all the best!

    Jennifer
