Mariposa DR Foundation empowers girls living in extreme poverty, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to become leaders in their communities. Each week at the Mariposa Center for Girls, girls engage in a host of activities—tutoring, sports, wellness classes, job skills training, leadership development, art classes, and more—that prepare them to lead healthy and productive lives. Mariposa is using its Maya Ajmera Sustainability Award to train staff, engage in promotion and marketing, and renovate its cafe space and kitchen for its newest income generation project.  

This article on www.globalfundforchildren.org caught my attention immediately. The proof that providing the proper resources proves successful to helping children of poverty become successful.   


WE SPREAD THE WORD

Our first job is to find community-based organizations that are changing children’s lives—then we help them grow with management assistance, capacity-building expertise, and networking opportunities. Our program officers spend thousands of hours each year providing services geared toward growing our partners’ visibility and sustainability. On average, our partners more than triple their budgets over the course of their partnership with us. Since 1997, we’ve helped our partners secure more than $10 million in new, direct funding from other donors.

Striving for Success in a Challenging Situation: A Lesson from Pakwach


Uganda has made some impressive strides in addressing the challenges of educating its children and youth, but there is still a lot more work to be done to ensure that the over 700,000 school-age children who are out of school are back in school.  As Sredojevic stated, with support from the government, positive results can be achieved. The coach’s assertions that “impossible is nothing” and “possible is everything” also align with the objectives of The Global Fund for Children (GFC), the Partnership to Strengthen Innovation and Practice in Secondary Education (PSIPSE) (an initiative that focuses on improving secondary education in East Africa, India, and Nigeria), and the grassroots organizations that GFC supports that are responding directly to the needs of girls affected by conflict in Uganda. 

 
Education is essential for all, given its many benefits, and it is especially valuable for marginalized populations. It has the capacity to elevate families out of poverty and end intergenerational poverty by equipping people with the skills needed to obtain employment and command higher wages. Schooling also brings with it social benefits, such as improved self-esteem, greater knowledge about a range of issues, and information on how to make a difference and how to practice healthy lifestyles.(Otoo 2016)

    Hi Stephanie,
    Thanks for sharing resources. I do agree with you, possessing education and knowledge can elevate families, boost self esteem and help with practicing healthy lifestyles. How we wish it was that easy, many poor countries suffer from poverty and lack of education because it was not their priority. I believe their basic needs come first and that is to eat and have a roof over their head. The government can't do much because they lack the funding. I am glad we have private organizations that reaches out to children and families in need.

    I enjoyed reading your blog this week. As much as I love education, it breaks my heart to know that so many children around the world cannot get a quality education. I get such joy when I read about the success stories from the different organizations that have made this topic of discussion their life's mission to help children around the world succeed. Thank you for sharing.

Research Simulation

                             Why is your simulation important to the field of early  childhood? My simulation regarding the difference in quality of early  childhood education between high and low income levels is  important because All children should be afforded the same quality  education no matter what their economic status.  Once we can identify the gaps in quality we can fill the voids and ensure all children are provided the same education.  If you were to conduct your simulation proposal, who would benefit? Immunization

According to vaccines.gov safe and effective vaccines have eliminated some diseases like small pox and Polio which in the past have killed thousands of people.  New vaccines are only releases and administered after long and careful research.  Getting vaccinated and following a schedule can protect not only children and adults but also babies who may not be of age to receive certain vaccines. The importance of getting vaccinated against worldwide illnesses before traveling outside the United states is extremely important to protect yourself from diseases we do not have in our country and to ensure not bringing the illness back to our country and causing an epidemic.
