As a teacher becoming a more effective communicator includes being more culturally sensitive.   We need to look beyond the surface and try to understand actions from others perspective.  Not placing judgment on families actions until we can understand why they are acting a particular way. 

This weeks lessons have taught me that I need to:

Understand cultural differences; by not only seeing others as cultural beings, but looking at myself as a cultural being as well.  Seeing how my actions as a teacher influence how the children behave and react.

Eliminate assumptions;  by eliminating assumptions that we create and gaining knowledge about  others cultures we can gain perspective outside of our own.

Increase awareness of nonverbal communication;  recognizing not only others body language, eye contact, postures and movements, but recognizing them in myself can enhance our abilities to relay messages in a more effective manner.

    Stephanie,
    I really like how you mention that to be an effective communicator, especially as an early childhood educator, we definitely need to be more culturally sensitive. I have taken it upon myself to change my classroom around to be more culturally responsive. It shows respect to children and families from different cultures. We must be more aware of our own verbal and nonverbal communication and cues, even more so now that we are teaching young children. According to Gonzalez-Mena, teachers must eliminate our own biases, self-reflect, and not pass judgment until we fully understand what other people are thinking and feeling. Great job on your blog post. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.

Research Simulation

                             Why is your simulation important to the field of early  childhood? My simulation regarding the difference in quality of early  childhood education between high and low income levels is  important because All children should be afforded the same quality  education no matter what their economic status.  Once we can identify the gaps in quality we can fill the voids and ensure all children are provided the same education.  If you were to conduct your simulation proposal, who would benefit? Immunization

According to vaccines.gov safe and effective vaccines have eliminated some diseases like small pox and Polio which in the past have killed thousands of people.  New vaccines are only releases and administered after long and careful research.  Getting vaccinated and following a schedule can protect not only children and adults but also babies who may not be of age to receive certain vaccines. The importance of getting vaccinated against worldwide illnesses before traveling outside the United states is extremely important to protect yourself from diseases we do not have in our country and to ensure not bringing the illness back to our country and causing an epidemic.
