Experiencing Support: Developing Communities of Practice

Community Resources -Our specialty is allowing people to make choices about their own lives… how they want to live… how they want to learn… how they want to work. By putting people and their families first, we help them to shape the direction and quality of their lives.
One of the New York City area’s largest and most experienced voluntary, not-profit, comprehensive service providers for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and/or a mental health diagnosis.   Dedicated to offering people of all ages and levels of ability opportunities for personal growth, intellectual advancement, skill building and vocational training, Community Resources Staten Island offers programming designed to provide a lifetime continuum of care for people with special needs and their families.
 A job that would be suitable for me at Community Resources  I would like to be a liaison between the families and the state agency that funds the program.  Knowing what is involved in a special program and what funding needs to be administered to be a successful program and continue to support and employee people with limitations.

A family governed organization committed to finding ways for people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities to build full lives as defined by each person and supported by dedicated families, staff and community partners.

Director -   The organization that created the first schools, workshops, day treatment programs and community residences, continues to meet the needs of its individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We offer individuals a wide range of programs, services and supports tailored to meet their specific needs.



Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights - The Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights (NMCIR), is a non-profit organization, founded in 1982 to educate, defend and protect the rights of immigrants. Recognized by the Board of Immigration Appeals, NMCIR is committed to expanding access to legal immigration services, participating in policy making and community organizing.

Most of the individuals who walk through the doors of the Coalition are low-income, non-citizen immigrants from the Caribbean, Latin America, and increasingly, Africa and the Middle East.   Some have lived in the U.S. for decades, others are recent immigrants.  The Coalition is often their first entrée into accessing legal aid or basic social services.
Director of Education 
Responsible for implementing and overseeing the day to day operations of the Education Department. The Director of Education has a commitment to social justice, self-confidence, initiative, and an open-minded outlook with a desire to constantly grow and learn. S/he must be open to receiving and offering feedback. S/he is at ease in varied social situations and community environments. S/he must be very good at working in a team and independently. S/he must demonstrate a passionate commitment to providing professional quality services to immigrants most in need. S/he must be a “people person” who takes great pride in ensuring that each person is provided with the highest quality treatment and attention.

    Stephanie,
    The communities of practice/organizations in the state of NY that you chose are excellent choices. By helping children and their families, we are literally changing the direction of their lives. All children and families need an equal and fair shot in life. Being the Director of the Education Department sounds like something I would be interested in too. It is exciting to be able to explore all the possibilities that are at our fingertips as we near the close of this wonderful program here at Walden University. Good luck to you.

Research Simulation

                             Why is your simulation important to the field of early  childhood? My simulation regarding the difference in quality of early  childhood education between high and low income levels is  important because All children should be afforded the same quality  education no matter what their economic status.  Once we can identify the gaps in quality we can fill the voids and ensure all children are provided the same education.  If you were to conduct your simulation proposal, who would benefit? Immunization

According to vaccines.gov safe and effective vaccines have eliminated some diseases like small pox and Polio which in the past have killed thousands of people.  New vaccines are only releases and administered after long and careful research.  Getting vaccinated and following a schedule can protect not only children and adults but also babies who may not be of age to receive certain vaccines. (vaccine.gov). The importance of getting vaccinated against worldwide illnesses before traveling outside the United states is extremely important to protect yourself from diseases we do not have in our country and to ensure not bringing the illness back to our country and causing an epidemic.
